Frequently Asked Questions
1. Does it cost money to have an issue or dashlight diagnosed on my car?
Yes. In order to diagnose your vehicle's problem, technicians use sophisticated diagnostic equipment and run tests in correlation with those findings in order to come to a conclusion regarding repair of your vehicle. This takes time, tools, and expertise. Diagnostic fees usually run between $56.50 - $113.00. Proper diagnostics usually take 1-2 hours of time to perform. In the rare occasion that more tests need to be run, a member of our staff will call you before they proceed to get authorization for additional time.
2. Will you perform repair or maintenance on my vehicle that I have not asked for?
No. It is company policy that all repairs/maintenance performed on any vehicle must have verbal authorization from the client. If we cannot get a hold of you to get authorization, your car will be parked until we can get authorization from you.
3. Does Import Performance have loaner vehicles?
Yes! We have two loaner vehicles at this time, which are available upon request and on a first come, first serve basis to customers over the age of 21. A valid driver's license must be presented in order to use the loaner vehicle and all customers must sign a simple agreement to use this vehicle. This vehicle can only be driven within North Carolina state lines. There is no charge to use the loaner vehicle, but we do ask all customers to replace the gas used before returning the vehicle with premium fuel. We cannot offer this vehicle to customers intending to drive out of state. We also offer a limited number of courtesy drives each day to your home or work within Wilmington city limits.
4. Do I have to schedule an appointment to have my car worked on?
Yes! We are a small staff - only four people work at Import Performance. As such, we keep a tight and efficient schedule. That said, we can usually fit your vehicle into our schedule same day. Worse case, the wait is usually no more than a day or two. Regardless, we promise, we're worth the wait!
5. Are you open on the weekends?
No. Import Performance is open Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. If you have a weekend emergency, feel free to bring your car to the shop and park it. There is a Night Owl locked drop box bolted to the front of our building. We'll get to it first thing Monday morning.
6. Do you have a towing service?
We use Bullards Towing service. They have a special rate for our clients: $45 for tows within New Hanover County. We've been using Bullards for quite some time now and they fully understand the towing requirements of the European cars we service. Their number is 791-7777. Check out their website: http://www.bullardstowing.com/
7. How often should I change my oil?
If you use regular oil, every 3,000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. If you use synthetic, you should change the oil every 5,000 miles or 4 months, whichever comes first. Recently, some manufacturers have led buyers to believe you can go longer between oil changes. We do not support this messaging. We've done our fair share of engine replacements and rebuilds as a result of poor maintenance and infrequent oil changes. Best to err on the side of caution!
8. My car needs a lot of work. Is it worth fixing?
Your car will be as good to you as you are to it. If you take care of it, it will take care of you. Invest in its maintenance and repair accordingly. Talin is always happy to talk you through repair decisions. We want to help you make the best decision possible regarding your vehicle. After all, developing an honest and ethical business relationship with you now increases the likelihood that you'll think of us when it's time for maintenance and repair on your new vehicle.
9. Does Import Performance perform "Performance or Speed Work"?
Although our name came be misleading, Import Performance specializes in the repair and maintenance of European and import vehicles. Our goal is to get your import performing in the best condition possible. We do perform a limited amount of performance turning on European vehicles only. We will not install aftermarket speed components or perform any speed work on Asian or American vehicles. We refer to Carolina Dyno for this type of work.
